As SMRs and advanced reactors move from concept to deployment, the nuclear sector faces a defining challenge: earning and sustaining public trust across a landscape shaped by misinformation, complex science, and the imperative of meaningful Indigenous partnership. This full-day workshop brings together a deliberately interdisciplinary group of researchers, regulators, industry practitioners, and community voices to do the kind of thinking and practice that technical sessions alone cannot. The workshop’s foundation is built upon the interests, needs, questions, and concerns of people, communities, and rightsholders.
Drawing on nuclear science, science communication, risk perception, Indigenous engagement, and policy, participants will move through structured dialogue and interactive exercises to discuss and develop practical, transferable approaches to nuclear public engagement to build interest and knowledge before the regulatory required engagement processes. The day is designed to produce both personal takeaways and a collective, tangible output that participants help shape together.

As the global nuclear industry moves from planning to deployment, advanced manufacturing and additive manufacturing (AM) are emerging as critical enablers of cost reduction, schedule certainty, supply chain resilience, and innovation. From large reactor refurbishment projects to next-generation SMRs and advanced reactors, manufacturers are increasingly exploring new production methods, digital technologies, and qualification pathways to improve competitiveness and support nuclear-grade quality requirements.
This workshop builds on a series of discussions, studies, and industry engagements undertaken over the past year, including sessions delivered at Conexus Collaboration Week, CSA Group research initiatives examining advanced manufacturing and emerging digital technologies in the nuclear sector, and industry workshops held CSA’s office in March. These activities have helped identify both the opportunities and barriers associated with broader adoption of advanced manufacturing technologies across the nuclear supply chain. The workshop is intended to move beyond awareness-building and toward the development of tangible actions, partnerships, and project proposals that can enhance the competitiveness, productivity, and export readiness of Canada’s nuclear supply chain.
This workshop will consider concrete next steps for strengthening licensee-regulator-vendor interactions on cyber security and AI. It builds on and brings together the results and open questions from two previous events: a side event held at DIET 2025 under the aegis of the NEA Reglab and in cooperation with the Vienna Center for Disarmament and Non-Proliferation (VCDNP), which explored whether to establish a dedicated Reglab on AI, cyber security, and regulation; and a brainstorming workshop organized by VCDNP in June 2026 to consider how to improve cyber security in the nuclear sector in the age of AI. The current workshop will revisit the open questions from last year’s Reglab session, present the conclusions and recommendations from the VCDNP workshop, and, on this basis, seek concrete ideas and recommendations for Canada and internationally.

The rapid development of Artificial Intelligence is driving a significant transformation across the regulatory landscape, with potential for a profound impact on licensing, compliance, and oversight. This session will delve into the transformative changes confronting nuclear-sector regulatory bodies, exploring how the nature of risk may evolve across the regulatory lifecycle and the imperative for segmented approaches tailored to specific asset lifecycle phases.
A key forum to discuss how industry may leverage AI-enabled tools for critical functions such as regulatory submissions, documentation, safety analysis, and supply chain management. This widespread adoption by licensees presents a new dynamic for regulators, who must understand, assess, and ultimately become comfortable with these advanced technologies while upholding safety and security standards, transparency, and public trust.
The workshop will explore the implications of the increasing volume and complexity of licensing documentation, highlighting how regulators are responding to these innovations around larger data volumes, evolving evidence packages, and new forms of machine-assisted decision support.
This interactive AI Lab, hosted by Deloitte UK with support from Arup, explores the critical need for regulator readiness in an increasingly data- and AI-driven environment. It aims to foster a collaborative dialogue on how regulatory frameworks can adapt effectively to industry’s AI advancements.
An opportunity for nuclear regulators, policymakers, utilities, operators, and supply chain partners to accelerate change in the sector and shape how AI is enabling better outcomes for regulators and industry in a digitally enabled sector. Participants will gain invaluable insights, contribute to a collaborative discussion, and leave with a comprehensive readout, guidance summary, and actionable plan. Following the workshop there will be an insights report on regulator readiness for AI deployment, solidifying a strategic path forward.
Quantum technologies may become part of the next-generation technology toolkit for the nuclear industry, supporting future advances in cybersecurity, sensing, modeling, optimization, and digital transformation. This workshop will introduce the “quantum-energy nexus” and explore the potential role of quantum computing, quantum-resilient cybersecurity, quantum networking, secure communications, and quantum sensors in nuclear and broader energy applications.
Designed for nuclear leaders, engineers, researchers, fuel reliability engineers, plant technology specialists, cybersecurity professionals, utility stakeholders, and innovation teams, the workshop will be accessible to participants without a quantum background. Through presentations, guided discussions, and interactive exercises, energy experts and quantum experts will work together to explore potential use cases, practical challenges, technology readiness, and next steps. Participants will leave better prepared to identify realistic opportunities, understand long-term potential, and engage strategically with the future of quantum-enabled energy tools.
